Article is devoted to 200-year anniversary of Scientific library of Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University and in detail opens a way of its emergence, formation and development. The emphasis on transformation of functions of library at different stages of development is placed: from completing of funds, delivery of literature to scientific, scientometric researches. The considerable attention is paid to the perspective directions of information and communication work. `Throughout the entire period of existence the University library dynamically developed and extended. In the twentieth century, it became a scientific center, which is engaged in development of methodical recommendations for high school libraries of the South of Ukraine, combining introduction and development of multimedia technologies and complex studying of fund, in particular the historical and dispersed collections, the biographic researches connected with history of university, information disclosures of collections of rare editions. Carries out information and analytical maintenance of scientific achievements of scientists of higher education institution for achievement and maintenance of worthy academic level of university. Article will be useful not only to historians and to librarians of the South of Ukraine, but also for interested local lore specialists.
