Purpose. The article is devoted to the means of creating a comical effect in belles-letters texts. The goal of the research is to determine the main lexical and stylistic means Stephen Leacock employs to achieve comical effect in his story An Ideal Interview with One of Our Greatest Actors. The main methods of the research are based on the analytical-descriptive one and the method of contextual analysis. Results. Having analyzed the existing definitions of the term “comical”, as well as the stylistic devices Stephen Leacock employs in his story, we came to the conclusion that comical effect is achieved by means of various stylistic devices, mainly irony and hyperbole. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching stylistics of the English language and stylistic analysis of the text.
