The lives of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have been the focus of media interest, particularly since their decision to leave Britain permanently. The Netflix miniseries Harry & Meghan and Prince Harry’s memoir Spare address the couple’s conflicted relationship with the media and express a desire to tell the story on their own terms. This article examines the ways in which they attempt to reclaim the narrative and how it relates to portrayals of the couple in the media. The criticism in the miniseries and memoir toward the media is presented in tandem with critique of the royal family, blamed for trying to control the narrative and sacrificing the couple in the process. Prince Harry and Meghan draw on their visibility and celebrity status in recycling, rewriting, eventually trying to redeem their story and control their public image and narrative.
