The relevance. The formation of English rail terminology is closely linked with the development of rail transport, first in the UK and then in the USA. Thus, the accuracy while translating professional texts largely depends on understanding these territorial differences. Aim of the study is the analysis of railway terms used in the American and British versions of the English language. The methods used include the analysis of vocabulary definitions, as well as the etymological analysis and the comparative method. The result of the study is the confirmation of the hypothesis that American and British railway terminology build a nomination on the basis of various key features (for example, American English uses more narrow features as the nomination basis (compare the terms controller and dispatcher). The results obtained can be used while teaching lexicology and terminology as well as professional English in transport engineering universities.
